Top 5 Reasons (Today) Why I Hate Flat Living
5. No say in building maintenance (our section needs some outer beautification)
4. Cannot outfit it with the appliances of my choice
3. Cannot paint, hang up anything, or change the way a door hangs without approval

2. Cannot play my music anywhere near loud enough
1. Some fool is always doing reconstruction work right at nap time
Honestly, I think these will always be the same with the exception of Number 1 but it will be interesting to see if anything changes...

I hear ya sister, my romantic notion of what it'd be like to escape home-ownership for a few years has totally backfired given the bureaucracy involved in renting! Although when my mom said she spent 5 hours laying down new bark mulch last weekend I had a momentary "thank goodness I don't have a yard anymore" moment...fleeting though.
I remembered your wall delimma when I ran into an article today on using starched cloth to paper rental flat walls. Here's the link!
Another article, using wider swaths of cloth.
Also, I have a drill and the powdered plaster for repair work if you ever want to hang anything up. The landlord can't complain if you fix the holes - the plaster dries white beautifully.
